It depends on when you do your exercises. For example, if your primary goal is to lose belly fat, then your goal should be to burn fat all around (there is no such thing as spot reduction). Cardio is excellent for this, and doing it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will prompt your body to dip straight into your mass (admittedly, this can burn a little muscle as well, but if your nutrition plan is good, you can minimize this). So empty stomach cardio, followed by a protein source with a few complex carbs might be good (think eggs/egg beaters, with veggies). Then if you do weights directly after that, optimally, you want protein and carbs immediately post-workout. Many athletes use protein shakes. A popular protein shake recipe is banana/other fruit, oatmeal, peanut butter, and whey protein. I'd also recommend eating some broccoli with this. Why? The protein will provide the material needed to build your muscle, the carbs will provide the energy to fuel the protein synthesis, and broccoli is known to boost testosterone, which jumpstarts your muscle repair. You should eat chicken sometime after weight training as well, as it contains a ton of protein.
