The key is a good, nutritious, healthy diet, and regular exercise.

Diet is very important in terms of fitness because not only do you need the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food but it's fuel for exercise and the exercise will help to keep your body in good shape. You should eat a lot of protein from good sources like lean meat, fish, eggs etc, lots of fruit and vegetables (try to get an eclectic mix of different colored ones to maximize your vitamin intake), whole grains like whole wheat bread, oatmeal etc. Also you should keep your fat intake reasonably low and try to eat 'good fats' rather than the kind of fat you get from junk foods. Also, drinking a lot of water is essential.

For exercise you should exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times per week. It's a good idea to do a good amount of different kinds of cardio exercise that will work your heart muscle. Try things like running, swimming, playing sports, using the machines at the gym. Aerobics classes or dance classes are also good. If you want to push your fitness a little more then try interval training. There's also some evidence that working out with a partner can encourage you to push yourself more. Some weight training is also good (even when you don't want to build bulk) because it will tone your muscles if you keep your number of reps high but use a low weight. Ensure that you keep a steady routine and don't be tempted to skip a session. Write down your goals and this will keep you motivated. Eventually it will become just a natural part of your life to include your workouts into your routine.
