What Does It Mean When A Patient Gets Infected And Inflammed Lungs After Surgery?

Anytime you introduce outside things to the body, you risk infection, no matter how sterile it is. Most infections come from the patient themselves - the patients have millions(if not billions) of colonized bacteria on our skin that can move on into the body when the skin is cut for surgery. Also, the ventilator can allow bacteria from the mouth to travel down into the lungs. And sometimes, inflamed lungs are just a reaction to the surgery anesthesia - then they become edematous(swollen with water) and not functioning properly. There's a reason you get that little thing you breathe in and out of after surgery(incentive spirometer), to help strengthen and deepen the breaths one takes, especially after abdominal surgery when shallow breaths are likely because it hurts to take deep breaths. Alissa, RN who's not quite sure if she answered the question anymore.... rambling again sorry!   AlisRN 40 months ago

Often it's the anesthesia that irritates the lungs. Plus the anesthesia suppresses the coughing reflex, so glop accumulates in the lungs. But you have to use anesthesia, so one has to put up with the aftereffects.Usually the irritation goes away quickly and any infections go away or can be treated with antibiotics.   Ancient_Hacker 40 months ago
