If Starvation Mode Makes Your Body Hold Onto Fat, Why Do Anorexics Lose Weight?

Well, if you read the Wikipedia article I don't know why you're asking a bunch of strangers who probably never read anything about "stavation mode". Most of the people in this forum believe the myths over the truth.

Metabolism is a very complex process. So, here's a mostly accurate thumbnail of starvation "mode". If you don't eat, your body will burn the carbs in your GI tract...your dinner, for example. The carbs are converted to glucose and then course through your blood stream as available fuel for your body. If you stop eating and your blood glucose falls to where there is not enough to support the energy demands of your body, your muscles will turn to the next most available source of energy which is glycogen....a very concentrated form of glucose which is stored in the muscles and the liver. If you continue starving yourself, eventually you will deplete your body's glycogen supply and your body will have to turn to its fat supply.

Triacylglycerol in your fat cells will be used to fuel your body and you will begin to lose fat. This will continue until you can begin to replenish your glycogen stores with surplus glucose gained from your GI tract or until you run low on body fat and begin converting lean tissues (muscle, etc) to glucose for fuel. In the latter case, your are officially starving and your body is using healthy tissue to support your life. And, burning healthy tissue is to destroy your body. Here's an example of the result --> http://www.chilloutpoint.com/images/2010...

There is no way you can be starving and gain fat. There is a myth about "starvation mode" which just comes from a misunderstanding of how the body works. According to the myth, if you try to lose fat by starving yourself or almost starving yourself, your metabolism will slow down and you'll either stop losing fat or you will actually gain fat back. Of course, both are impossible.

What does happen to fat loss is the rate of fat loss will slow per incremental increase in dietary caloric deficit. If for example, a person has a deficit of 500 cal/day and they lose a pound per week of fat they will not lose two pounds per week of fat if they double their deficit and consume 1000 cal/day less than they burn. The reason for this would take me longer to explain than YA allows us room to answer. However, it has to do with the efficiency of burning fat versus glucose, for example. More calories are required to convert fat to ready energy (ATP) than glucose so some of the extra energy must come from your food meaning all of your deficit is not being used for fat loss.

Starvation mode is nothing but starvation. There is one fact of dieting which has no exceptions and it is: As long as your energy intake (calories in) is less than your energy output (calories burned) you MUST burn from your body (food, glycogen, fat, lean tissue). In short, everyone has the potential for losing fat through proper eating.

Good luck and good health!!

Make pancakes even healthier with the addition of mashed baked sweet potato, a number of pureed spinach and blueberries, or perhaps cooked quinoa.

In order to make up for the loss of food your body starts to digest the muscle tissue. Karen Carpenter was anorexic and died from a heart attack because there was no muscle tissue left in it.

the body only holds on to essential fat which doesn't have to be that much.

if you want to believe that you lose fat first and then muscle in starvation mode then do it and see.

you'll have first hand knowledge if it is true.

if you aren't eating enough and your body needs protein for repair and regeneration then where do you think the protein comes from? fat can't be converted to protein so you body has to convert the muscle on your body into protein for the health of your internal organs and whatever else protein is needed for.

actually if I recall correctly your body will start to feed on your muscle tissue before using the fat reserves when going into starvation. Anorexics lose weight over time and use different methods excess exercise, the old finger down the throat routine (which by the way your digestion starts in your mouth so you'll still get nutrients but not enough which possibly could trick the body into start using fat reserves...but I'm not a doctor or scientist so I'm not sure), pure fad diets, etc. Starving to death is more complex meaning it could be due to the lack of food or the lack of the ability to process food.

Measure away that bowl of cereal as well as oatmeal, including the fruit, crazy, maple syrup, milk, and yogurt you help to increase it. Have a set of measuring cups and spoons accessible instead of eyeballing.

Going low carb is proven to encourage weight loss. Limit the carbs (especially enhanced carbs like muffins and bagels) and will include a little fat.
