Can You Make Someone Diet - My Father Is Pre-diabetic?

Can You Make Someone Diet - My Father Is Pre-diabetic?

Postby Keller » Thu Aug 31, 2017 5:22 pm

Long-story short by family is going through a rough time because my dad seems to have no will-power when it comes to eating. He's 64 now and weighs nearly 250lbs at 5'8".

He has numerous health issues; pre-diabetic, blood sugar problems, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

The doctor always tells him that he has to work on losing weight and, as of this point if things don't shape up, he could become diabetic.

The doctor gave him guidelines on what to avoid: eggs, red meat, cheese (really all dairy), pastries...

My dad just doesn't seem to get it and he just continues to eat. At dinner he always helps himself to seconds and thirds and when my mom calls him out on it he' like "It's my house, I'll eat what I damn well want!"

Then my mom goes on saying, "Diabetes, insulin shots, heart attacks, is that what you want?!?!" and my dad slams the dinner table and storms off.

We tried getting my dad on Weight Watchers with my mom as a companion so that he wouldn't do it alone.

After three months my dad gave up on it because he found the point system "stupid".

I've been talking to my mother recently and she is convinced that she has to take on "serious measures" since my dad is unwilling to follow the diet on his own terms.

My mom is saying she has to watch all the food in the house and throw out all of the foods that are not in my dad's guidelines and she will ration the food he eats by serving him specially made plates and refusing him more food.

She said that she hates it has to come to this but my father's simply not getting the seriousness of the matter.

Is there anything we can do to make things easier?

My dad doesn't seem to like being "ganged up" on and being "bossed around" by my mom about it, and that's what's going to happen if he won't change.

Can you "make someone" diet or is force like this necessary?

HERE IS MY STORY:

I am diabetic, I have high blood pressure, I have high cholesterol, essentially I am like your dad's twin sister. Oh, I am 65 and recently retired.

I take insulin, I take crestor, and two different tablets for the high blood pressure.

I see a metabolic diet specialist every week, and maybe, just may, I might go off my insulin.

Because, I had too much fat in my stomach, 2 years ago I was hospitalized with pancreatitis, the pain was so unbearable, I was given morphine.

SO REALLY, IF YOUR DAD DOES NOT TAKE CARE OF HIMSELF, LIKE THEY SAY DIABETIC IS A SILENT KILLER.

if you re having trouble getting started make a small move such as starting an eating log or buying walking shoes you re three times more likely to follow through if you start with small gestures such as these

You can't MAKE him diet...but you can find delish foods to make him that are healthy and bring it to him as "treats"! Spoil him a bit, I wish I had my dad to cook a different life for, he will at least try some "sweet treats" that are ok for him to eat. You can do it, but don't push him, he will push back until he is ready. Slowly ease him without him knowing. Every little bit helps! Everyone else should be eating the same stuff! Sorry, but you want to help him? Eat a diet you all can eat.
