...cheese is usually high in fat and fat can increase stool bulk. In addition, all milk and milk products leave a residue in the GI tract that can irritate the bowel and cause diarrhea and cramping. You can have a small amount of mild, low-fat cheese(Swiss, Mozzarella, American, muenster, cottage cheese, cream cheese), up to 1 1/2 ounces in a day, but that isn't much. 1 ounce of mild cheese replaces 1 cup of other milk products, of which you are only allowed two cups total day. Here is an example of foods you can and can't eat on a low residue diet:WHAT YOU SHOULD DO Choose only foods on the approved lists below. Be especially careful to avoid the items on the "Do not eat" lists. You'll probably be able to return to a normal diet as soon as you feel better. Generally, no or at least very little, because... ...cheese is usually high in fat and fat can increase stool bulk.
